VetSnap offers multiple ways to log both full and partial patient-level waste.

Partial Patient Waste

  • You will enter the quantity given to the patient, excluding waste, in the Quantity box.
  • The waste is the amount of medication not given to the patient and should be separated from the total quantity and added to the Waste box.
    • Note that the quantity box added to the waste box equals the Total Quantity Removed From Containers (includes waste) box.
  • For example, if you remove 1 ml from the container, but the patient is only given 0.7 ml, you will waste 0.3ml. Therefore, you will enter 0.7 ml in the quantity box and 0.3 ml in the waste box for a total of 1 ml removed from the container.

Entire Patient Waste - If none of the medication was administered to the patient, here’s how to log it:

If the entry has already been logged:

  1. Go to the Reconcile tab.

  2. Find the entry in the Pending section.

  3. Select the entry and click Waste Log.

  4. The entry will be converted to a waste entry in your logbook.

If the entry has not yet been logged:

  1. Create a new log entry.

  2. Enter the full amount withdrawn in the Quantity field.

  3. Save the entry.

  4. Go to the Pending section of the Reconcile tab.

  5. Select the entry and click Waste Log to convert it.

Can the "Waste" field be used for individual syringe hub loss?

No, we do not recommend using the Waste field for individual hub loss. Hub loss is difficult to measure accurately due to several variables, including:

  • Needle size

  • Vial puncture frequency

  • Technique variations
